Photographs need simplification
JPG has no transparency and can contain compression artifacts. A complex photo rarely remains clear at 16px. Crop around a recognizable subject or create a simpler symbol before converting; the ICO generator cannot invent missing detail.
Generate the intended file
Upload the requested static input, choose Contain or Cover and generate the icon. The downloaded favicon.ico has a real ICO directory and three embedded PNG sizes. Use the full package option only when you also want the separate PNG assets and example manifest.
Integrate and verify
Keep file paths and caches in mind when updating an existing website icon. Upload your generated file, add the appropriate icon link and test in the browsers and devices you support. The package's manifest and paths are examples to review, not a guarantee of installability. Input processing and downloads stay on your device.
Common questions
Is the ICO only a renamed PNG?
No. It writes an ICO header and directory with real 16, 32 and 48px PNG payloads.
Will every browser update the icon immediately?
No. Browser and site caches can retain older icons. Verify the deployed path and caching separately.
